What is Belly Flex?

Be Birth Aware, Be Birth Fit

Belly Flex is yoga based childbirth education and preparation.  The Belly Flex course has been created by belly flower principal Natalie Burgess and draws on childbirth and midwifery based knowledge and combines this with the practical application of yoga and relaxation principles.

Why is Belly Flex beneficial in pregnancy, birth and beyond?

Learn to work with your body and your breath to birth your baby

bullet

Promotes physical and emotional fitness in pregnancy

bullet

Promotes release of endorphins - your own natural pain relief, which is more effective than any medical method of pain relief

bullet

Teaches breath awareness and the importance of the breath in labor and birth for you, your uterus and your baby

bullet

Teaches and maintains correct posture, encouraging optimal pelvic balance and positioning of your baby for birth

bullet

Teaches pelvic floor awareness and learning to release the pelvic floor, allowing your baby to birth

bullet

How your partner can work with you in labor

bullet

Alleviates common discomforts of pregnancy such as lower back ache, heartburn, sciatica, morning sickness

bullet

Improved fitness and tone after birth

bullet

Reduces the risk of post natal depression

Upright and active positions in both the first and second stages of labor are known to:

bullet

Increase contraction intensity and efficiency

bullet

Reduce medical methods of pain relief

bullet

Reduce methods to augment ('kick-start') labor

bullet

Increase a woman’s perceptions of a positive birth experience

bullet

Reduce length of second stage (Enkin et al, 1999)

Research into the practice of yoga in pregnancy and into labor and birth when compared to no yoga:

bullet

Increase maternal comfort in labor and in the 2 hours post labor

bullet

Decrease duration of 1st stage

bullet

Decrease total time in labor (Chuntharapat et al, 2008)
